Entrevista del testigo

Oleksiy R., born in 1935, recalls: “I saw a column of Jews from Bukachivtsi escorted by armed Germans and the police. There were about 60-80 Jews. A young Jew tried to escape. He ran to the houses and hid in the barn, but the guard found and brought him back to the column.” (Testimony n°2113, interviewed in Tenetnyky on June 18th, 2016)

Nota histórica

Tenetnyky is located 47 km north-west of Ivano-Frankivsk. According to the census, in 1939 970 inhabitants lived in the village, 10 of them were Jews. They lived off small-scale trade or handcraft. The village was occupied in the first week of July 1941.

The execution which took place in the village of Tenetnyky was not mentioned in the archives, but over the course of our field work and with the help of local villagers, Yahad’s team identified an execution site located in the forest north of the village, near the road and the field. From the accounts of an eyewitness we know that 6-7 Jews, who were hiding in the chapel in the village of Cherniv, were shot in Tenetnyky and buried there. One Jew was shot on the spot while attempting to escape. The rest were shot on the edge of the pit by the Germans and later buried by the local villagers. The witness also happened to see the columns of Jews taken from Bukachivtsi in the direction of Rohatyn, which confirms that the Jews from the nearing villages were resettled in the Rohatyn ghetto in the fall of 1942, where they were shot on the spot or deported to Belzec afterwards.
