Witness interview

Nikolay L. evokes : "Jewish war prisoners were forced to carry rails except from Krasnogorivka to Gorniak. The summer, the Germans authorized war prisoners to bathe 5 or 10 minutes in a close lake. Two tried to run away, the one was killed, the other one succeeded in running away." (Witness N°1585, interviewed in October, 2012)

Soviet archives

"On February 4th, Jewish citizens were taken in the steppe. They were not shot but beaten up , then abandonned in the agony in the steppe. Besides, the inhabitants were warned that any attempt to save them would be settled by an execution." [Act of the Soviet Extraordinary State Commission, RG-22004/7021-60/330]

Historical note

Krasnogorivka is a village west of Donetsk. Before the war, there were just a few Jewish families living there. The village was under German occupation between 1941 and 1943.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

From 1939, western native Jews found refuge in the village, cared for by the Soviet administration. These Jews were shot in trenches in February, 1942.
