Witness interview

Anton M. stated: “I saw the Germans, with dogs, arresting about 15 people in the street at random. But the dogs were specially trained to find the Jews. The Jews were thrown in jail for the night. And the next day, the Germans arrested inhabitants to tell them to go to the bridge. I saw the Jews, only men, coming to the bridge with barbed wire and a stone tied around their necks. The translator said: “We will drown the Jews in the Dnister.” (Witness N°1864, interviewed in Halych, on September 11, 2013).

“The Landwirt of the towns were named: Hey for Nadvirna, Kehler for Tlumach, Mücke for Halych and I was in charge of the one from Ivano-Frankivsk. I stayed in Ivano-Frankivsk until June or July 1944. At the end of the war, I was Hauptscharführer.”

Historical note

Halych is located along the Dniester River in western Ukraine, 25 km north of Ivano-Frankivsk. The town was occupied by Germans at the beginning of July 1941. According to witnesses, the Jewish community was large. Most of them lived in the town center on the right bank of the river.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

The anti-Jewish aktions took place in the fall of 1941 or 1942. During these aktions around 1,000 Jews were shot. According to some sources and Yahad research findings, some 20-30 Jews were drowned in the Dniester River.
