Witness interview

Nina N. remembered Lyuba, a Jewish woman living in Babinovichi:
«YIU : Were there many marriages between Jews and Belarusians?
Nina: There were no mixed marriages here. Wait a minute – there was a Jewish woman, Lyuba, who was married to a Russian. Lyuba was a member of Nina’s family. She was brought to the shooting this way. She and her children were escorted by two Germans. She talked to them. She was blond. The shooting took place at the Jewish cemetery and the bodies were transferred somewhere else afterwards.” (Witness N°573, interviewed in Babinovichi, on October 26, 2011)

Historical note

Around 50 Jewish families lived in Babinovichi before the war. Some of them managed to evacuate before the Germans came. There was a synagogue built out of wood and a Jewish cemetery.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

In September or October 1941, about 16-17 Jewish men were selected, brought to the Jewish cemetery and shot. The remaining Jews were forced into a house. In February 1942, they were rounded up and driven out of the village – and probably shot on the road near the lake.
