Entrevista del testigo

Ivan V. remembers: "I quietly watched the mass shooting and I didn’t see everything. But I can tell you there were German gendarmes and other units. Some Jews succeeded in escaping. I heard the gunfire from my village, isolated shots or in burst. I went to see the mass graves the following day." (Witness N°242, interviewed in March 2010)

Nota histórica

Molchad is a village located 139 kilometers southwest of Minsk. It was a shtetl and in 1921, the Jewish population in Molchad was 1,020.

Holocausto por balas en cifras

An open ghetto was established in 1942, which also accommodated Jews of the region. The Jews were sometimes required for hard labor, in particular agricultural work. A first shooting took place in June, 1942 when 200 Jews were killed in a nearby forest in pits dug by the Jews themselves. The liquidation of the ghetto took place in July 1942 in the forest. There were approximately 3,000 victims. Approximately 200 “specialists” were shot shortly after.
