“I hereby certify that under an order of a Romanian commandant during the first days of July 1941 the local population of Jewish nationality was cruelly executed. 22 people, including elderly, young and small children, were killed. Their corpses were buried at the animal waste ground. Before being shot the victims were tortured. All the Ukrainians residents were gathered by force to watch the execution.” [Deposition of a local resident Ivan Ts. Given to the State Extraordinary Commission, on July 26th, 1945; RG.22-002M:7021-79-81]

Nota histórica

Bobivtsi and Yaseny are located 30 km west of Chernivtsi. In the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century the villages were a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1918 the villages were taken over by Romania. In 1940, Soviet rule was declared in the northern part of Bukovina, but in July 1941 Romania occupied its territory again.

Holocausto por balas en cifras

Unfortunately, Yahad-In Unum couldn’t find any local witnesses who could provide more details about the execution of 22 Jews conducted by Romanian soldiers in July 1941. From the archives we know that they were first rounded-up and tortured. There were men, women and children among the victims.
