Witness interview

Adam K., born in 1933: “One or two days later, a starosta
from Norytsi arrived. Do you know where Norytsi is? - Norynsti? It is a village nearby. So, the Noryntsi starosta arrived, and he was not alone. He went to the field, where people were harvesting potatoes. My mother was there at that time, she was the one who told me about this. I didn’t see it myself. People were harvesting potatoes with spades, and this Jewish woman was with them. He killed her from the road…The starosta arrived from the road. I don’t know if he was alone or if someone else was with him, this what people said. He pointed his weapon at her and shot her dead.” (Testimony n°2555U, interviewed in Latashi, on March 21, 2019)

Historical note

Latashi is located 150 km (93mi) north of Zhytomyr. There is not much information about Jews living in Latashi. A few families lived there before the war who owned shops. A bigger Jewish community lived in the nearby town of Narodychi.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

Latashi was occupied by Wehrmacht troops on August 22, 1941. According to a testimony recorded by Yahad, a local Jewish woman, Braina, was shot along with her son, Berchyk, born in 1933, and an elderly man with a baby from Narodychi. They were shot by the starosta from the village of Noryntsi. Their corpses were buried in a sand quarry north of Latashi. Today, there is no memorial at the site.
